There Are Different Types Of Coin Collecting That You Can Choose

Coin collecting has been started centuries ago as a way to accumulate wealth. Nowadays, the purpose has shifted. Although you still can accumulate wealth from coin collecting, the main purpose today is to put together different types of coins as collection items. The high level players in this field are competing between each other by purchasing the rarest coins out there. This is indeed an expensive hobby and collectors require sufficient knowledge to determine and find their preferred coins.

There are various types of coin collections, but the two most commons are collecting coins from different countries and collecting coins from different time periods. The first type of coin collectors tries hard to acquire coins from as many countries as possible regardless of their age. Some countries like to produce new coins and thus this condition makes a never ending coin collection. On the other hand, the second type or year collection focuses on a specific coin and denomination. Lincoln penny, which was minted in 1909 up to present, is a good example of this type of coin collecting.

Another interesting type of coin collecting is error collections, which basically focus on coins with mistakes. The mistakes can be very obvious, but also can be obscured. It is a normal thing for coins minted before the 19th century to have mistakes because they were minted by hand. Common errors that are being looked for are double dies, overdates, double strikes, repunched mint marks, clipped, and mules. Mules are perhaps the most interesting one because the coin has different denominations on each side. Collectors like to collect these errors because they are extraordinary and very rare to encounter nowadays because minting has been fully automated.

Some coin collectors like to collect coins that have a specific design. This kind of collection is called the type collection. For example, a collector prefers to collect coins that have a hole in the center. There are several countries that have coins with a hole in the center so the collector can collect these specifically designed coins from those countries.

Coins with a specific subject like animals marked on the coin can also become one type of coin collections. The collectors will need to find out coins with the preferred subject from other countries if they want to increase their collections. A dealer can be a good source of information to procure this kind of coins.

The difference in the coin composition can create a coin collection as well. For example some coins are made of two metals, which can become the basis of the collection. As you can see, there are many types of coin collecting and it is all depend on the preference of the collectors.
