Another version of this theme is to collect a specific coin from the very first model it was minted to the present model. Mintmark collection is another theme that bases on the mintmark difference of some coins. Some mintmarks are rare and difficult to produce, which increase the value of the coin. Variety collection features the same coins that are made from different sets of dies. In the past, dies were hand made and thus some of them had slight differences. Coin collecting based on errors is another interesting theme. Before the 19th century, it is common for coins to have errors as automated minting has not been introduced. This theme is closely related with the variety collection theme. Subject is also a common them in coin collecting. For example a coin with animals is considered as one subject. Composition also can become a basis in coin collecting. Some coins are made of different metals and some even have two or three metals combined. The last common theme in coin collecting is period collections. The basis is the period from which the coins were minted.
